The second decade of the last century saw two revolutions taking place in the erstwhile Champaran District. The first was the freedom struggle for the nation launched by the Father of our nation Mahatma Gandhi from this landof Champaran. His frequent visit to this region gave momentum to this movement. At the same time a similar revolution began in the field of education and that was the beginning of ChristRajaHigh School in the campus of the Catholic Church, Bettiah in the year 1927. It was shifted to the present complex in the year 1930 and in the same year itself Mr. G.F. Fox, the director of public instructor, Bihar and Orissa, accepted the application for recognition sent by Fr. P.J. Sontag, S.J., the then superior of Patna Jesuit province; and through the letter, Letter no. 146, dated 11/09/30 confirmed the recognition of the school.

Now, Khrist Raja High School (K.R.), Bettiah, is one of the educational institutions besides K.R.EveningSchool and St. Xavier’s HigherSecondary School that operates in the K.R. Campus under K.R.E.A. (Khrist Raja Educational Association). This institution which completes 83 years of its glorious existence this year is one of the oldest schools in West Champaran, Bihar, India. It is a Catholic Christian Minority Institution run by the Jesuits, the members of an International Catholic Religious Order. Jesuits have served people of all faiths, all over the world, as educators, scientists, explorers and social reformers since 1540. That centuries old tradition of service to others is the corner stone of Jesuit education. These same men responding to the needs of the times have done yeoman service in the field of education in this part of the state of Bihar, India through this school. In fact, if Champaran is in the education map of India a lion share of credit for this goes toK.R. It indeed has a glorious past and a vibrant present to boast of. Almost anyone who is ‘who is who’ of Bettiah and the neighbouring towns, whether he is an artist, scientist, doctor, engineer, professor, politician, administrator, entrepreneur, high ranking defense officer or religious leader, would definitely credit K.R. for his achievement and the service to the nation he has rendered. The first batch of students, numbering just eleven, appeared for the Board Exam in 1931. Last year, in 2007, 148 students wrote exam and all of them passed in the First Division except 12. The School was awarded the best school certificate for this achievement by the HRD minister, Bihar.

By now so far some 6000 students have passed Board Examination and gone out from this temple of learning and have made their mark in the society, nationally and internationally. The present student strength of the school is 2146, of which 468 are girl students. We started co-education in the school only from 1998 onwards. The first batch of 28 girl students appeared for the matriculationexam this year, 2008.
